Colored and special-effect contact lenses can make a costume, but lenses bought from costume shops, gas stations, or online sellers that don’t require a prescription can scratch the eye, cause painful infections, and even lead to permanent vision loss.

Keep Halloween safe for your eyes

  • Only wear decorative lenses that have been fitted and prescribed by an eye doctor, even if you don’t need vision correction.
  • Never share lenses with friends.
  • Wash your hands before handling lenses, and use fresh solution every time.
  • Don’t sleep in them. Take them out as soon as the party is over.
  • If your eye becomes red, painful, or blurry, remove the lens and call your eye doctor right away.
